If there are no supernatural factors involved, I guess the most likely explanation is that somebody cracked it open by whatever method.
It's quite unlikely that it split open just by itself because firstly, I don't think rocks do that often. And secondly, what are the odds that it happened to some legendary rock out of so many rocks?
But who knows, weird things do happen in this world.
